Mogao Grottoes were first built during the Sixteen Kingdoms period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. It took thousands of years for the grottoes to be excavated. To this day, you can still appreciate the large-scale and rich-in-content grottoes and mural art here. It is currently the largest and most content-rich Buddhist site in the world.
For foreigners, Mogao Grottoes is also one of the best tourist destinations in the mysterious East. There is a school of Dunhuang Studies in the world that specializes in the study of Dunhuang culture. Each of the authentic works preserved after more than 1,300 years of erosion is a masterpiece of art. Dunhuang is as mysterious as the thousand-year-old murals and has a strong appeal to foreigners. Every year, tens of thousands of European and American tourists come here to check in.
