US-style mediation leaves the Middle East confused

Agence France-Presse said that after Blinken left the Middle East empty-handed, the Israeli military launched a "targeted elimination" operation in southern Lebanon on the 21st, resulting in the death of a commander under the mainstream faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization, the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah). Tirawy, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, said that Israel's assassination of Fatah officials further demonstrated that "Israel wants to ignite a full-scale war in the region." Egypt's "Pulse" website said that the US mediation has no results, and the Middle East has once again fallen into confusion. Peace is elusive and a clear future is out of reach. The entire region seems to be on the edge of a cliff. "The United States is trying to play the role of a wavering commander. The erratic and vacillating positions of US officials on the ceasefire issue have not only confused international observers, but also deepened the mutual distrust between the parties concerned. The frequently contradictory messages sent by the White House are like the constantly moving quicksand under their feet, making it difficult for allies and opponents to determine their position."

According to the New York Times on the 22nd, the Biden administration has been taking the lead in promoting a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, while Egypt has acted as a mediator and put forward a "transitional proposal" aimed at bridging or at least narrowing the differences between the two sides. But this week, Blinken's visit to the region did not resolve any obvious major issues, and the two sides are at loggerheads. A major focus of the disagreement is Netanyahu's insistence on stationing troops along the "Philadelphia Corridor" bordering Gaza and Egypt, while Egypt and Hamas strongly oppose Israel's continued control of the region.

"People familiar with the matter revealed that Israeli negotiators were surprised and, in some cases, angry about Blinken's remarks this week." The New York Times said that during his visit to Israel, Blinken said that Netanyahu "has accepted the US proposal for a transition plan, and now everything is up to Hamas." Israel's New News quoted sources as saying that "when he (Blinken) announced that Netanyahu accepted the US proposal and transferred the initiative to Hamas, he made a very serious mistake." "Blinken wanted to show optimism and stand with Netanyahu, giving him a gift, but sentenced the negotiation agreement to death."

On the 21st, the US statement changed. The White House issued a statement saying that Biden had a phone call with Netanyahu that day, "The President stressed the urgency of reaching a ceasefire and hostage release agreement, and discussed the upcoming talks in Cairo to remove any remaining obstacles." Netanyahu's office confirmed the call but did not disclose the content. According to Axios News Network, citing sources, Biden urged Netanyahu to show greater "flexibility" during the call, focusing on the issue of troops stationed in the "Philadelphia Corridor."

"The fighting in Gaza is intensifying, and the hope for a ceasefire is fading." Agence France-Presse reported on the 22nd that officials from the United States and regional mediators Egypt and Qatar were scheduled to hold a new round of talks in Cairo this weekend, but it is still to be confirmed. The New News quoted "officials familiar with the negotiations" as saying that "the chances of reaching an agreement are slim." The report said that the US Middle East envoy McGurk has been sent to Cairo to prepare for the meeting and seek a solution to the issue of troops stationed in the "Philadelphia Corridor."

Qatar's Al Jazeera commented on the 22nd that politicians from various countries often talk about a "new round of ceasefire negotiations" in Gaza, but the situation in each round of negotiations is no different. This is a "negotiation game". Netanyahu hopes that the negotiations are a way to manage the war, not to end the war. Previously, Hamas agreed to Biden's proposal in May and passed by the UN Security Council in June, but Israel has to add new conditions in each round of negotiations. These conditions are adopted by the United States and require Hamas to agree, otherwise it will become "unreasonable." The report believes that unless Washington puts pressure on Netanyahu to force him to give up his new demands, it will be meaningless to hold talks in Cairo this week.

Egypt's Pulse website said Hamas has been indifferent to the US-led ceasefire efforts and is deeply suspicious of the US intention to promote a ceasefire.
