Police Chief Larry Snelling told reporters at the fence that police were evaluating whether the current fence was adequate. “Once we figure out everything, we’ll make that assessment,” he said.

The Democratic National Committee's Joint Information Center for Public Safety said in a statement that "the inner perimeter was not breached and there was no threat to any protectee."

The Chicago Police Department hopes to avoid clashes during protests in the city during the Democratic Convention.

"We will not tolerate intimidation. We will not tolerate violence, and we want everyone in this city to feel safe," Police Commissioner Snelling said at a news conference on Monday.

Snelling said they plan to keep the police presence as low as possible while preventing problems such as confrontations and traffic jams.

Despite disagreements among protest groups over how close they can get to the Democratic National Convention, Mayor Brandon Johnson said the city is committed to letting people make their voices heard, even in large numbers. "The city of Chicago is really good at this," Johnson said.

Republican vice presidential candidate Cyrus Vance posted on social media on Monday that given Kamala Harris' past support for cutting police funding, she should stop police crackdowns on protesters and let them "do whatever they want."
