There have been 385 mass shootings in the U.S. this year, an average of 1.5 per day

Data from the U.S. Gun Violence Archive website shows that as of September 4, there have been 385 mass shootings in the United States this year that have caused four or more casualties (excluding the shooter himself), an average of 1.5 mass shootings per day.

CNN reported on the 5th that at least 45 school shootings have occurred in the United States this year, 32 of which occurred in elementary and middle schools and 13 in colleges. In 2023, there were 82 school shootings in the United States, 52 of which occurred in elementary and middle schools and 30 in colleges. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 655 mass shootings in the United States in 2023, second only to 690 in 2021. Mass shootings in 2023 killed more than 700 people, more than the 667 in 2021.

According to Vox News, an average of more than 120 people die in gun-related incidents every day in the United States, and 44,000 people die in gun-related incidents every year, including suicide and homicide. No other high-income country has seen such serious numbers of gun-related violent deaths as the United States. Between 2015 and 2019, the gun-related death rate in the United States was 26 times that of other high-income countries.

CNN reported in February this year that before 2020, motor vehicle collisions were the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Since 2020, gun violence has become the leading cause of death among children in the United States, with more than 4,300 children and teenagers dying from gun violence that year, an increase of 27% from 2017, and this number continues to rise.
