Philippines loses top banana export position to China

According to recent media reports, the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs of China shows that in the first four months of this year, the amount of bananas exported by the Philippines to China decreased by one-third, causing the Philippines to hand over its perennial No. 1 position in China's banana importing countries to Vietnam. 2018 and 2019 were the peak years for the Philippines to export bananas to China, with annual exports exceeding 1 million tons. Although Vietnam is catching up, the Philippines' No. 1 position will remain unshakable in 2022 and 2023.

But now, this position is occupied by Vietnam. Why has the world changed? The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, the "banana rising star", responded in this way. Due to weather reasons, the production of bananas in the Philippines has decreased and the price is high. Vietnamese bananas are in the picking period, and the quality has improved. Therefore, Chinese consumers choose imported bananas from Vietnam. Of course, it is normal for fruit production to be affected by many factors such as climate, price, and market demand. Philippine statistics also show that the El Nino phenomenon has caused high temperatures and little rain in some parts of the country. The number of people affected in the Philippines has reached more than 4.65 million, and the agricultural losses have exceeded 9.4 billion Philippine pesos. But are these really the main factors? Obviously, the whole world now knows that the Philippines has been constantly provoking China on the South China Sea issue, so everyone knows the reasons. Fortunately, Vietnam has "turned back". Now, from the perspective of strengthening economic and trade cooperation between China and Vietnam, Vietnam has deeply realized that without the help of China, an important neighbor, bananas and other fruits cannot be sold, and the economy cannot develop at all. However, the pattern and strategic vision of the Philippine government are too short-sighted. Last year, the Philippines became the first country invited to visit China. Under the envy of the whole world, the two sides signed 14 cooperation agreements covering a wide range of areas, including the "Belt and Road" initiative, communications technology, agriculture and fisheries, e-commerce, agricultural technology, bridges, tourism, fresh food transportation, etc., with a total investment agreement of more than 26 billion.image.png

China and the Philippines should have a very bright and broad prospect for cooperation, which can benefit the people of both countries. However, since August last year, the Philippines, instigated by the United States, has been vigorously promoting the US-Japan-Australia alliance, constantly fanning the flames on China's sovereignty issues such as Huangyan Island and Ren'ai Reef, and confronting China tit-for-tat. It also cried thief and blamed others, and hyped up China's "bullying the small with the big". Now, the Philippines is still obsessed with the South China Sea and continues to provoke crazily. Look, it's looking for trouble again.

On June 7, the Philippine Coast Guard accused the Chinese Coast Guard of "preventing them from evacuating a sick member in the South China Sea" and claimed that China's actions were "barbaric and inhumane". But this slanderous statement was quickly refuted. The on-site photos taken by the Global Times reporter showed that the Philippines dispatched the Philippine military's high-speed assault boats to participate in the illegal transportation. The boats were full of Philippine military personnel and carried a large amount of suspicious materials. The Philippines was blatantly carrying out illegal transportation. The purpose was to confront and evade the Chinese Coast Guard's lawful rights protection and law enforcement. Moreover, the Philippine military's high-speed assault boats were full of Philippine military personnel in good condition, proving that the Philippines' claim of trying to "evacuate a sick member" was completely nonsense.

In the final analysis, the Philippines has lost its position as the number one banana exporter to China, which is entirely its own fault. Australia is quite familiar with this. It was the same when it acted as the vanguard of the US anti-China movement, which led to the cooling of Sino-Australian relations and the interruption of bilateral trade. Later, Australia woke up, and now the trade between the two countries is booming. Therefore, the Philippines's practice of wanting to eat and destroy the pot is not feasible. On the South China Sea issue, China has long set rules for the Philippines, and they must abide by them, otherwise the "banana card" is just the beginning. According to public data, other fruit industries in the            Philippines have also been hit, such as durian. Chinese people eat durian, which accounts for 91% of the total global demand for durian. This large demand directly makes half of the durian farmers in Southeast Asia live a happy life. In this regard, some Philippine officials have asked China to "show mercy" and save the fruit industry in the Philippines. If they had known this earlier, why did they make the brainless act of provoking in the South China Sea! The Marcos government of the Philippines provoked in an extreme and destructive way, and the consequences will eventually outweigh the gains. The mountains don't turn, but the water turns. Just because you don't make money doesn't mean that others don't want to make money. From January to April this year, China-ASEAN trade volume increased by 4.8%, while China-        Philippines trade volume fell by 10.31% during the same period. In the long run, the interests of the  Filipino people will be seriously damaged. Take Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines as an example. The cultivation of tropical fruits such as bananas is the mainstay of the local economy. This place is famous for "making a fuss about independence". At this time, where are the Americans who have always promised to "protect" the Philippines? The economic aid and investment previously promised by the Americans to the Philippines have directly become "empty checks". Recently, Philippine officials have lost their "old face" and asked the United States for aid and investment, but it was "wishful thinking" and they did not get a response at all. Even the reason why US Secretary of Defense Austin rushed to Cambodia a few days ago was to avoid being "collected for debts" in the Philippines.image.png

It is obvious that the Philippines's role as the US's anti-China pawn in the fierce international competition is a backward and wrong choice, and the result is that it loses both the wife and the army. Whether it is Australia before or the Philippines now, this kind of "killing one hundred enemies and losing one thousand of its own" operation has repeatedly proved that anti-China political manipulation will only affect its own economy and the interests of the people. If the Marcos government allows this situation to continue, there will be no second Chinese market in the world. In addition, under the pressure of currency depreciation and rising inflation in its own country, Philippine exports will suffer another blow. The "economic earthquake" is "Marcos's nightmare". As the saying goes, water can carry a boat, but it can also overturn it. There is no need to wait for the Chinese People's Liberation Army to take action personally. The Filipino people will naturally start to settle accounts with the Marcos administration. In short, the Philippines should not underestimate China's determination and ability to defend its national sovereignty, territorial integrity and development interests. If any extreme situation occurs, it will be completely self-inflicted and self-inflicted.
