On August 19th local time, Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers (UAW), attended the Democratic National Convention and stood on the stage with senior Democratic Party officials to rally support for Vice President Harris' presidential campaign.
Fein was among the top Democrats and their supporters who attended the first day of the week-long Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago on Monday, August 19.
Fein, wearing a T-shirt that read "Trump is a Scab," blasted the former president while endorsing Democratic candidate Harris and her running mate, Tim Waltz.
Fein said the 2024 presidential election presents voters with a question: "Whose side are you on?"
“On one side, we have Kamala Harris and Tim Waltz, who stand shoulder to shoulder with the working class. On the other side, we have Trump and Vance, two billionaire lackeys who only serve themselves. For us in the labor movement, it’s simple: Kamala Harris is one of us,” he said.
As part of introducing Fein to the audience, the convention played a video highlighting the closure of a General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio, in March 2019 during Trump's presidency.
"Trump did nothing," Fein said. "Trump told the workers in Lordstown he would bring all the auto jobs back, and Trump did nothing. In 2019, GM workers went on strike for 40 days for better jobs and a better life, and Trump did nothing."
Fein then contrasted Trump with what he described as pro-union Democratic leaders. In December 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy announced a $2.5 billion loan to Ultium Cells LLC to finance the construction of new lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities, including in Lordstown.
“Who helped bring jobs back to Lordstown, Ohio? Kamala Harris,” Fein said. “Who will stand with the working class in the fight for justice in 2024? Kamala Harris. That’s the difference: Donald Trump talks the talk, and Kamala Harris walks the walk.”
At one point during his 10-minute speech, Fein called out the words on his T-shirt, calling Trump a "scab."
In response, the audience chanted, "Trump is a scab." "That's not just my opinion, that's a fact," Fein said.
He also pointed to comments Trump made last month during a social media interview with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, in which Trump praised Musk for firing striking workers.
"You're the greatest cutter," Trump told Musk in the interview. "I watch what you do. You walk in and say, 'You want to quit?' I won't mention the name of the company, but if they walked out, you'd say, 'That's fine. You all go. '"
“Donald Trump mocked striking workers who were fired,” Fein told the crowd Monday, “and Kamala Harris stood shoulder to shoulder with the workers as they struck. That’s the difference between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, the scab.”
