As Trump and Harris are about to stage a "critical battle", Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives fiercely criticized the Democratic government's decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan that year. According to the Associated Press on the 9th, Republicans released an investigation report on the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2021 on the 8th, severely criticizing the Biden administration's failure in this chaotic withdrawal, and believed that the latter was responsible for the "disastrous ending" of the Afghan war.
According to Reuters, the investigative report was led by Michael McCaul, a Republican congressman and chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. It took three years to complete and the report is more than 350 pages. The report claims that the Biden administration's decision to withdraw non-combatants was too late, and there was no communication between departments in Washington and with Afghan officials. It also messed up the departure procedures for Afghan civilians who met the conditions for departure. The report stated: "We abandoned our Afghan allies and allowed the Taliban to carry out retaliatory killings against them when we promised to protect the Afghan people, which seriously damaged the United States' credibility on the world stage."
Sharon Young, a White House spokesperson for oversight and investigations, said the Republican report was based on "carefully selected facts, inaccurate descriptions and inherent biases". She said the United States' hasty withdrawal was due to the "bad deal" that former President Trump reached with the Taliban. The Biden administration simply inherited an untenable situation in Afghanistan, where it was either to continue the war against the strengthened Taliban or to end the war. House Democrats responded in a statement that the Republican report ignored the facts about Trump's role. Miller, a State Department spokesman, said it was in the best interests of the United States for the Biden administration to eventually end its deployment in Afghanistan.
The Associated Press said that the report of the House Republicans did not make much of a breakthrough because the withdrawal had passed several independent reviews. Previous investigations and analyses pointed out that there were systemic failures in the past four administrations and concluded that Biden and Trump should bear equal responsibility.
Democratic Congressman Gilmes told CBS that Republicans were "politically polarized, cherry-picking reports for one thing, naked partisan competition." U.S. News & World Report said that last month, Trump attended a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery to commemorate the U.S. soldiers who died in the Afghan evacuation, and he took the opportunity to attack Biden and Harris over the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. The report said that as the U.S. election entered its most intense stage, the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan had become highly politicized.
